As far as I remember, you do meet Esmeralda if you bring Elazul which starts off a quest similar to the anime. However, its funny since its not Nunuzac who denies Elazul from being the Knight but Esmeralda herself.

She says that Elazul being her knight would mean he was "cheating" on Pearl xD

Anyways, spoiler about Nunuzac that might be revealed next episode While he is naturally condescending, he means well for Esmeralda, calling her mudstone to devalue the worth of an Emerald and denouncing Jumi as "inferior stones".

That Elazul guy really thought highly of himself and thought of being a knight for other people when he barely able to keep Pearl safe.
